Ministry magazine article by S. Joseph Kidder, April 2009. A traditional view describes the pastor as a servant caregiver who looks after the congregation in every way. People and pastors generally expect pastors to be like this. A more recent view describes the pastor as a chief executive officer, who orchestrates the church into health and growth. Both of these views are weak theologically and biblically. The solution is clear—the pastor’s role description is found in the ministry of Jesus, which includes a solid focus on making disciples.
