Lake Tarawera, Hot Water Beach Campsite

We are excited to offer your young people a new event for 2018 – Pathfinder Expeditionette. We acknowledge that Teen Expedition is quite expensive, and that a week long expedition can be a little intimidating if you aren’t really an outdoorsy type. So, we are introducing a new event for those who have little to no outdoors experience, and whose fitness might not hold up to a week of expedition. The Expeditionette is only a weekend, and the cost is only $30. Hopefully, this is within reach of every one of our Pathfinders. Like Expedition, though, age will be 12 up.
This year, we are beginning with a trip to Lake Tarawera. We will be camping at the beautiful Hot Water Beach campsite. I’m sure that many of our young people will appreciate a soak in some hot thermal water to ease any muscles that perhaps haven’t walked as much.
- Date: Friday 16 – Sunday 18 March
- Muster: Tui Ridge Park from 6pm onwards. We will gear check there, have church Sabbath morning, then head down to the track.
- Age: 12 onwards
- Cost: $30 Teens, $35 for Adult helpers
- Theme: “Unburdened”
- Maximum numbers: 80 people (get in quickly!)
- Specialised gear required: Everything needed to hike and be independent (eg. food, packs, tents light enough to be carried, sleeping mats and sleeping bags, cookers, shoes with ankle support, wet weather gear, etc. Check online, some can be hired.)
Sabbath – As this is only a weekend, we will be walking on Sabbath. However, to give the young people an experiential learning experience about the rest we have in Christ, we will not carry packs on Sabbath. We will be literally “Unburdened”. Packs will be boated in. Sunday, on the other hand, we will be reminded not to simply give God our Sabbath, but every day of the week, as we pick our “burdens” back up and hike out with packs on Sunday. This is a great way to help our young people experience a living parable of the rest Christ has called us into, and the importance of not just giving Jesus our burdens, but leaving them with Him.
PLEASE NOTE – Teen Expedition will be run as normal late Sept – early October during the School Holidays. Expeditionette will give our young people a taste of the joy of God’s creation, and the confidence we gain from doing hard things and achieving more than we thought possible. Hopefully, after doing this, they might want to challenge themselves further on the full Expedition too!
